Did you know that 98% of lemur species are endangered and face extinction in the next 20 years? Lemurs are an important part of life on the island of Madagascar, some species, like the mouse lemur, act as an indicator species (these species are usually very sensitive to changes in their environment, which makes it easier to gauge the health of an ecosystem) and others, like the ring-tailed lemur and ruffed lemurs, are keystone species (these species are critical the health and survival of their ecosystems). So how can we #ProtectWhatsLeft? Can you draw us a picture? The Lemur Conservation Network posts weekly prompts in October to inspire us to care about the future of lemurs and encourages us to send in our artwork for them to auction off at a later date. Will you come draw with us at Boo at the Zoo, Oct 19 from 9am-12pm? Would you like to bring your art in for us to send off?
2024’s #LemurArtChallenge 4 prompts are: Portraits (close up of lemur faces), Action Shots (lemurs in motion), Family Time, and In The Wild. We will accept artwork until November 14, 2024!

Did you know that Madagascar rivals Australia in having the most unique wildlife? Both Australia and Madagascar have extremely high endemic rates (meaning they have flora and fauna that ONLY live there). Approximately 95% of Madagascar's reptiles, 89% of its plant life, and 92% of its mammals are unique to the island. One such mammal is the lemur, of which there are over 100 species that can only be found on the island. Here at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, we are home to four lemur species: brown lemurs, black and white ruffed lemurs, ring-tailed lemurs and red ruffed lemurs. Video shows our Lemur Adventure open daily weather permitting.

Conservation Corner: Let's talk about the Critically Endangered Colombian Black Spider Monkey!

These amazing primates play a vital role in their ecosystem, helping to disperse seeds and maintain the health of their forest homes. Unfortunately, due to deforestation and hunting, their numbers have dwindled to alarmingly low levels.

DYK? Spider Monkeys have prehensile tails, which means they can use their tails like an extra hand! Despite their name, Colombian Black Spider Monkeys aren't always black; they can also have brown or red fur. They are social animals, living in groups called troops that can range from 15 to 40 individuals. The AGCZ is home to three Colombian Black Spider Monkeys.

We have never been to this zoo, and it sure is the “Little Zoo that Could!” We are on a family vacation with 4 children 5 and under. They all had fun and were so excited to see all the animals. We arrived right at 9am and all the animals were ready to show off!

We even got to watch the keepers interacting and providing enrichment which was such a cool experience. You can tell the workers loved the animals and are really dedicated to the care and treatment of the animals.

It took us around 2-2.5 hours to go around the whole zoo so it won’t be a full day trip, but it will definitely be a wonderful stop to make on your trip to Gulf Shores!

While visiting Orange Beach decided to visit the local zoo. What a great place, helpful employees who did a lot of explaining of animals feeding. It was a great walk. A great day. All the animals are very interesting and especially loved the herb garden..

I’ve been bringing my children here since they were little and now I’m bringing my grandchildren. I love our little zoo. It’s not too big and by the time the kiddos are wore out, we are all done. Everyone is so hospitable and kind. Cute gift shop and love feeding Ben the giraffe.

We loved our visit! Such an affordable option for a zoo. Plenty of animals to see. Loved how close you get to all of them. Very clean and tidy. Disappointed the tigers weren’t out though. But overall a fantastic experience! Our kids loved it.

Such a beautiful zoo! Very clean with ample restrooms and benches. There were so many animals to see which was very unexpected. We saw tigers, lyons, monkeys, giraffes, lemurs, many types of local birds, etc. For an extra fee, you can feed the giraffes and have an opportunity to get up close and personal with several different zoo animals.

There is a great little enclosed bird area with turtles where you can sit and watch the birds. They also have a great gift shop with wonderful gift items.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience. We had a great time watching the animals and will definitely be back!
