With immense sadness, we are announcing the passing of our male lion, Simba.  Simba, who was almost 16 years old, was diagnosed with cancer and under our veterinarian team’s care for some time.  Today, after exploratory surgery, which revealed the cancer had spread to his abdominal and thoracic cavities, we faced the heart-wrenching decision to euthanize him.

Simba arrived at the Zoo in 2005 as a youngster.  Playful and loving as he grew up at our former facility, he quickly became a favorite, both impressing and inspiring our guests.  Simba continued that role prominently at our new facility, where his roars could be heard for miles.  His majestic stature impressed all who saw him, and even more so when he was atop his favorite rock.  As one of the Zoo’s more iconic animals, he was deeply loved by our staff and guests.  

While any loss among our animal community is painful, Simba’s loss is exceptionally difficult for the Zoo and its staff.   Please keep the zoo family in your thoughts and prayers as we struggle with the heartbreaking loss of our beloved Simba.
