Mirror, Mirror on the Wall!
Ever wondered how animals react when they see themselves in a mirror? It's fascinating! Some animals, like elephants and dolphins, can recognize their reflection, showing signs of self-awareness. Others, like dogs and cats, might think it's another animal and react with curiosity or playfulness.

Keepers try to offer a variety of enrichment options. Some are more involved, like big puzzle feeders, while others are as simple as showing our animals a mirror. Big cats are not known to recognize themselves in the mirror, as seen here with Daniel making sure a surprise male didn’t show up to steal his palm fronds!

As for Waylon… sometimes, the mirror could be your new best friend… if you can figure out where the rest of his body went.

From AGCZ Conservation Committee: In the News: A Lioness from Ukraine made it safely to the sanctuary. Nature does not concern itself with how humans may choose to interact with each other, yet war destroys it all the same. In the wake of the invasion of Ukraine, many animals needed new homes after missiles destroyed the areas they called home. One lioness named Yuna made a four-day trip from her home near Kyiv, Ukraine, to the Big Cat Sanctuary in Smarden, England, where she will spend the rest of her life. Four other lions are due to be rescued as well: Rori, a three-year-old male, is temporarily being held in Belgium until the Big Cat Sanctuary can finish construction, and three one-year-old female lions named Vanda (believed to have been a pet in south-eastern Ukraine), Ama and Lira (believed to have been bred illegally). In the heat of the summer, big cats can be exceptionally lazy. Daniel and Chadwick are no exception now that they’re well over 400 lbs and have grown in their impressive manes. However, with our recent cooler mornings, Daniel has been showing off a little more of his silly personality! Enjoy this video as he lazily plays in his water to retrieve a bone he dropped in it— while still trying to seem cool in front of his new cheetah neighbors!

#DYK? Coatis are omnivores and have a varied diet that includes fruits, insects, small vertebrates, and even eggs. They use their long snouts to forage for food in the leaf litter.

From Conservation Committee: Have you visited the zoo recently and heard a quiet sneeze or whistle while looking around the serval yard? But no one else was around? Then you may have overheard one of our African grey parrots, either Pepper (presumed male) or Jake (confirmed female)! African greys are wildly intelligent and famous for their ability to mimic human speech, however, recent research suggests that they may have a better grasp of human speech than previously thought– they’ve been known to use language purposefully when asked certain questions! Their intelligence and ability to bond strongly with humans have made them one of the most popular pet birds in the world, leading to over 2 million African grey parrots being exported from Africa to be sold into the pet trade. As a result, African grey parrots are now considered “endangered” by the IUCN.

We have never been to this zoo, and it sure is the “Little Zoo that Could!” We are on a family vacation with 4 children 5 and under. They all had fun and were so excited to see all the animals. We arrived right at 9am and all the animals were ready to show off!

We even got to watch the keepers interacting and providing enrichment which was such a cool experience. You can tell the workers loved the animals and are really dedicated to the care and treatment of the animals.

It took us around 2-2.5 hours to go around the whole zoo so it won’t be a full day trip, but it will definitely be a wonderful stop to make on your trip to Gulf Shores!

While visiting Orange Beach decided to visit the local zoo. What a great place, helpful employees who did a lot of explaining of animals feeding. It was a great walk. A great day. All the animals are very interesting and especially loved the herb garden..

I’ve been bringing my children here since they were little and now I’m bringing my grandchildren. I love our little zoo. It’s not too big and by the time the kiddos are wore out, we are all done. Everyone is so hospitable and kind. Cute gift shop and love feeding Ben the giraffe.

We loved our visit! Such an affordable option for a zoo. Plenty of animals to see. Loved how close you get to all of them. Very clean and tidy. Disappointed the tigers weren’t out though. But overall a fantastic experience! Our kids loved it.

Such a beautiful zoo! Very clean with ample restrooms and benches. There were so many animals to see which was very unexpected. We saw tigers, lyons, monkeys, giraffes, lemurs, many types of local birds, etc. For an extra fee, you can feed the giraffes and have an opportunity to get up close and personal with several different zoo animals.

There is a great little enclosed bird area with turtles where you can sit and watch the birds. They also have a great gift shop with wonderful gift items.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience. We had a great time watching the animals and will definitely be back!
